In 2023, a single bug in a little-known software caused one of the largest data breaches in history that impacted over 60 million people around the world. Making the matter worse, even if the companies whose data were stolen by the MOVEit attackers used every cyber security technology available, it would have made no difference in the outcome because the data handed by MOVEit would still be there, defenseless!

After SolarWinds, NSA and CISA admitted that perimeter offense is not working. The NSA recognized the “perimeter-based network defenses with multiple layers of disjointed security technologies have proven themselves to be unable to meet the cybersecurity needs” and recommends to “focus on protecting critical assets (data) in real-time”. Similarly, the CISA wants to encrypt “all data on rest and in transit to the maximum extent possible”. Four years later, the data is still exposed, and data breaches are running rampant.

The cyber space today is no safer after the tens of billions of dollars investment

A cyber attack sent a third of the casinos in the Stripes (Las vegas) back to the 50’s, and another third has to pay $15M to keep the hacker from releasing personal data of their best customers for now. Have any leaders, board members and CEOs, ever questioned what the investment in cyber security has actually bought for them? If it doesn’t work this time, what is the chance it will work to fend off future attacks if the only change to make is another round of “best practices”?

History has proven that repeating the same mistake many times would not make it right. It is time for a change!

Let’s face it, continuing doing the same won’t lead to a different result. Just as T-mobile which had EIGHT (8) data breaches during the last 5 years.

“It is only a matter of time until you will be compromised.”

The most forward-thinking cybersecurity mindsets and strategies I now encounter adopt an “it is only a matter of time until we will be compromised” approach.  This realization does not mean that we should abandon all hope.  It is just a realization that cybersecurity compromise is now a part of our “new normal,” a fact of business life.  This is a core cybersecurity mindset which embraces all aspects of our professional skills and capabilities while elevating and prioritizing the protection of our organization’s data.

A real kicker from Barrons: as D.A. Davidson analyst Linda Bolton Wesier noted, Clorox was in the midst of a multiyear drive to upgrade its digital capabilities, with annual expenses as high as 70 cents a share, when the attack happened.

CEOs and CISOs should ask if  their cyber investment gets a better return than that of Clorox

Deploying UDS, the only data-centric security solution, would have stopped the MOVEit data breach.

Those incidents are a perfect demonstration that in our interconnected world, one can never know for sure when, where and how an attack will happen. However, one can do now is to make the data always safe – with UDS, the only holistic data-centric security solution.

Something worth thinking about, don’t you think so? After all, a data breach will get everyone in trouble, why not avoid it altogether?
